Talya Cousins

We're excited to take another look behind the curtain of one of NYC's chic editors – you know, those ladies (and a few gentlemen) who have the enviable job of handpicking amazing gems and jewels to feature in your favorite magazines. You have to figure: if they see the best of the best on a daily basis, they've got to have some inside info we'd be interested in. And rest assured, the Israeli-born Talya Cousins is full of great tips on delicious food, thought-provoking writers and under-the-radar designers. With a resume that includes eight years working as an editor for Conde Nast – most recently at W Magazine, where she was the senior jewelry and accessories editor – today she contributes to various publications like Departures, Robb Report, Bloomberg and Martha Stewart Weddings. Plus, she is working with the CFDA where she co-initiated (with Simon Alcantara) its first jewelry showcase with the goal of celebrating American jewelry design today. With all that said, we trust her taste. You will too.

Perhaps one day Chanel and REI would collaborate on a solar paneled backpack. A girl can dream…

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

I adore everything about Café Mogador in the East Village. It’s run by a husband and wife team, who like me, grew up in a Kibbutz in Israel. It reminds me of home.  My favorite dish is their Grilled Merguez over Basmati Rice with lots of ‘Schug’ (homemade hot sauce).

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry from another jeweler, what would it be?

So many pieces take my breath away.
Among my favorites are Muriel Grateau hand-carved rings. I also love her porcelain work.

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

Islesboro, Maine. To get there you have to take one (sometimes two) flights, rent a car and book a ferry but it’s very much worth the trouble. Having the ocean as the backyard and visiting with our close friends never gets old.

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

I’m a poetry lover– ‘Map’, which is a collection of  Wislawa Szymborska’s, is one of my new favorites.

Secret/favorite spot for cocktails at a trade show (and what’s your go-to drink?)

My in-laws live in Vegas so during shows I try to escape the strip and meet them at one of their local hangouts. We often go to a low-key Thai place called Lotus of Siam for Tito’s & Tonic –which pretty much goes with anything on the menu.

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is . . .

Color changing Alexandrite ranging from slightly bluish green to raspberry red depending on the time of day.

It’s your birthday and your favorite flower arrangement arrives – what does it look like?

I love wild flower arrangements especially ones that include Anemones.

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

Go for a run in Riverside Park in the mornings when dogs are permitted to roam without a leash.

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

An antique miniature spoon pendant with a hidden locket purchased in Woodstock, NY.

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Jiddu Krishnamurti. He was brave, kind and wise.

What's the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the backstory.

My engagement ring, which my husband surprised me with while we were traveling in Europe.  It was designed by our friend Sharon Khazzam using his grandmother’s center stone: A pear shaped diamond set on its side.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day?

Vespa. We ride it from early March till the first snowflake falls.

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

The family of the year
Madeleine Peyroux
Paul Simon
John Coltrane
Ha’Chaverim Shel Natascha

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

There is nothing I’d rather do on weekends than cook for my friends and family. Recently, we’ve been having people over for long leisurely breakfasts.  I normally place a large bowl of homemade olive oil granola and fresh berries on the table so everyone can help themselves and then make individual bowls of Sorrel infused rice with a spicy poached egg on top. (The dish is inspired by the menu at Sqirl, LA)

Be honest – who’s your celebrity crush?!
Robert Redford

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I’m an avid hiker so if I had to pick just one, it would have to be a backpack. Perhaps one day Chanel and REI would collaborate on a solar paneled backpack. A girl can dream…

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

My aunt Jacqueline, who passed away when I was 9, wore a musky delicate perfume and that mixed with the scent of freshly-baked baguettes she’d make for us remained my favorite scent.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, which would it be and why?

I got very lucky and a few years ago I was invited to attend the Couture shows in Paris. The Chanel show was my favorite. I was blown away by the love and care that was poured into making the garments and the elegant way in which the clothes were presented to the clients.

Tell us your beauty secrets (think: can’t-live-without makeup and skincare).

Kiehl's super fluid sunscreen SPF 50+ all year round, a large glass of water before bed and anything my friend Jamie Rosen recommends.

Signature nail polish and/or lipstick shade for a night on the town?

Maybelline Audacious Asphalt 390 nail polish
Chanel Rouge Allure 82 Incognito lipstick.

What beauty/health/apothecary product can you not live without?

Hair- Wen by Chazz Dean sweet almond mint replenishing treatment mist
Teeth- Raw Essentials brushing rinse
Skin- Kiehl’s Midnight recovery concentrate

Victoria Gomelsky

If you're lucky, you call her Vika. From her high-profile jobs as an in-demand timepiece and jewelry writer for the International New York Times to her Editor-in-Chief position at JCK magazine, she's an industry expert and pretty much always the most fun person in the room. (Plus, how many people do you know with a namesake Shinola watch?) She's traveled everywhere – from pearl farms in Australia to gemstone mines in Tanzania – but it's her former life as a Mexican fisherman that you need to know about.

I recently made my own signature scent at a blending bar and I named it Memento Vivere
(Latin for “remember to live”).

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

When I’m in Brooklyn Heights, Noodle Pudding is my dining room. It’s a cozy family-owned Italian place named after the specialty of the town in Italy where the family is from (or so I’ve been told), it’s cash only, and the pork chop served with hot peppers and mashed potatoes is on my top 5 list of favorite meals. When I’m in Los Angeles, it’s a toss-up between the carne asada tacos at Lares, the best Mexican restaurant west of the 405, and the frickles (fried pickles!) at Birds, a cheap and cheerful neighborhood bar in Franklin Village.

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry, what would it be and why?

I love everything by Taffin, especially his earrings and rings set with inverted diamonds—they remind me of little sea urchins.

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

Mexico! I was a Mexican in my last life and feel equally at home in the cities (Oaxaca and Mexico City), on the beaches (Puerto Escondido, Zihuatanejo, and a killer little resort just south of Rosarito in Baja called Las Rocas), and at the ruins (Tulum! Teotihuacan!).

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

Blood Will Out” by Walter Kirn, a memoirist, journalist and novelist writing about his peculiar relationship with a German con artist and murderer who impersonated Clark Rockefeller. (I earned my MFA in nonfiction writing and am a huge fan of the genre. Oliver Sacks, Ian Frazier, and—no surprise—Joan Didion are among my faves.)

Secret/favorite spot for cocktails at a trade show (and what’s your go-to drink?)

Any bar that serves a tasty Manhattan is fine by me.

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is . . .

Spinel! Ruby’s pretty doppelganger comes in a rainbow of colors beyond red, is hard (and therefore durable), isn’t susceptible to treatments, and is beloved by gem connoisseurs. (Tourmaline and opal are runners-up.)

It’s your birthday and your favorite flower arrangement arrives – what does it look like?

I love plants, but I have a black thumb, so I gravitate to flowering succulents because they’re very resilient.

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

I live in L.A.’s Beachwood Canyon, the road that leads straight to the Hollywood sign. Not only are there miles of trails that wind around the sign and into Griffith Park (all offering spectacular views of downtown L.A. and the Pacific Ocean), there are also numerous staircases leading from one canyon street to another; three sets up and down the stairway closest to the Beachwood Café in the heart of Hollywoodland kicks my a**.

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

I’m sure it was a silver trinket, purchased from some market in Central America, where I spent several months backpacking after graduating from college—but who knows? The first piece I remember buying is a Chopard Happy Diamonds knock-off ring at a jewelry show in Dubai. It soon broke ;-(

If you could have dinner with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

I love René Magritte, the Belgian surrealist. But I don’t speak French or Flemish—so my English-speaking backup would be the German photographer Thomas Struth (I’m fascinated by his work, plus he is married to someone with whom I went to grad school).

Share a photo of the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the back story.

On the same day that the knock-off ring I bought in Dubai broke, I won another cocktail ring in a press drawing: a Gumuchian Tahitian pearl set in a substantial, flower-like 18k yellow gold setting. That was December 2004, and I’ve worn it nearly every day since.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day? (Tell us about your car, motorcycle, bicycle, taxi, Uber, skateboard...)

When I moved back to L.A. in December 2009 (after 11 years in NYC), I bought myself a 2006 BMW 325i because I wanted something nondescript that would run well for a long time. So far, so good!

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

Curtis Mayfield, David Bowie, Everything But the Girl, Massive Attack, and Pink Floyd

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

I’m a terrible cook—so terrible that I can only prepare things (as opposed to cook them). My go to meal is raclette, a delicious-beyond-words Swiss cheese that’s served melted with boiled potatoes, cornichons, pickled vegetables, prosciutto, and copious amounts of white wine.

Be honest – who’s your celebrity crush?!

Channing Tatum

What’s your signature scent and what three words would you use to describe it?

I recently made my own signature scent at a blending bar and I named it Memento Vivere (Latin for “remember to live”). I’d describe it as “bright happy blossoms.”

Claudia Mata

W magazine's Accessories and Jewelry Director might make it all look super easy – you know, wife of a gorgeous yogi/nutritionist, mom to the most adorable little girl, Mila, tres chic fashion girl about town – but we have to assume that there's something sinister lurking below the surface. No? Not so much? OK, fine, we admit that Claudia is all of those things plus kind, funny and quick with a killer smile. The winner of the 2015 GEM Award for Media Excellence always fills the pages of W with outside-the-box jewelry with a quirky edge, and her personal style is just as captivating. (Check her epic Instagram if you don't believe us.) What can we say? We may just have a girl crush.

I got my ears pierced the day after I was born (a tradition in El Salvador) and I’ve been buying little earrings for myself as long as I can remember.

Let’s have dinner at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. Where do we go and what do we eat?

When it’s warm, I love to walk to and from dinner, so I always exhaust all the restaurants in my neighborhood. I recently moved to the Lower East side which has SO many options, but my usual go-to is The Fat Radish. It’s a block away from me, the food is farm-to-table (which my husband who is a yogi/nutritionist loves) and I usually get whatever is the special of the day!

If you could buy any piece of contemporary jewelry, what would it be?

This is very hard because I literally obsess over a new piece EVERY DAY!  Today, I’m in the mood for color and I’m eyeing this Marie Helene de Taillac ring where the focus is all about the stone (see picture, above).

The vacation spot that you keep going back to over and over?

My husband’s family has a vacation house in Punta Mita, Mexico and it’s the most amazing place to go to: it’s remote, relaxing and right on the beach so we can spend the day frolicking in the water with our baby.

What’s the last book you couldn’t put down?

I admit that I have less time to read now with a toddler, but I’m reading a book I got for Christmas — All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer which I can’t put down.

Secret/favorite spot for cocktails at a trade show (and what’s your go-to drink?)

I have two drinks: white wine or a margarita, so I’m pretty easy to please! My favorite Las Vegas trade show spot was poolside with a cocktail after the show wrapped, but sadly I don’t have the time for that anymore…

The gemstone you’re currently lusting after is:

I’m really feeling red spinel right now.

It’s your birthday and your favorite flower arrangement arrives – what does it look like?

All white! I love ranunculus and peonies.

What’s your favorite piece that you bought or received in the last year and why?

There are so many pieces I love, I could go on and on!  I added a Marie Helene de Taillac lips ring to the top of my daily ring stack because it’s just so fun and playful.  A Mish sunflower ring— he is one of the nicest people in the industry so whenever I see it on my hand, it makes me smile. And I LOVE anything personal that reminds me of my baby, like these initial pendant necklaces, I wear a different one every day!

You have 30 minutes to work out – what do you do?

Yoga with my husband!

What was the first piece of jewelry you bought for yourself?

I don’t remember the exact piece, but I’m pretty sure they were earrings. I got my ears pierced the day after I was born (a tradition in El Salvador) and I’ve been buying little earrings for myself as long as I can remember.

Take a pic of the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own and tell us the back story.

It’s not that exciting looking, but my gold wedding band is the most sentimental piece I own. I was in Colombia with my then ex-boyfriend (yes, ex) and we decided we were going to get married and elope! We went into multiple jewelry stores in Cartagena and being that it was Colombia, most of the options were emeralds, which wasn’t what I was looking for. We wound up custom making a very thick band and had the gold mixed so it would be yellow with a slight hint of pink. Even after I got a diamond engagement ring, I still preferred wearing the band because it reminded me of the impulsive, romantic moment.

What’s your preferred mode of transportation day-to-day?

I’m an Uber girl.

Top 5 bands in your playlist - go!

I hate to say this, but I don’t even know who I listen to anymore because I use Pandora in my office. I grew up in New Orleans going to live music shows every weekend, so I can’t believe I’m saying that!

You’re having guests for the weekend. What’s your signature dish that you cook for them?

We have a grill on the terrace of our apartment, so it’s grilling and veggies. My signature dish is usually a dessert: I love to make bread pudding!

Be honest – who’s your celebrity crush?!

Easiest question to answer: Ryan Gosling.

If you could only carry one handbag for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chanel

What’s your signature scent and how would you describe it?

Guerlain – It reminds me of dessert, almost a vanilla.

If you could sit front row at any fashion show, which would it be and why?

Chanel, because it’s like watching theater.

Tell us your beauty secrets.

I go to this holistic spa, Pratima, and I use their custom made serums and lotions.  Beauty wise, I can’t walk out the door without curling my eyelashes!

Signature nail polish and/or lipstick shade for a night on the town?

I only wear red or nude nail polish, so nudes in the winter and reds in the summer.  My lipstick shade varies with my level of tan.
